Pop art is an art movement from a group of artist in London in 1952, they meet regularly to discuss the mass culture’s place in fine art. I don’t know pop art was originate from London until I look up the history, because most of the well-known pop artists are based in New York, such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg. Apposed to fine art, pop art features the image from everyday life, the emerging of mass culture – newspapers, comics, advertisement and consumers goods.
Last Friday, I went to see the Roy Lichtenstein exhibition in Tate Modern. It is worth to go if you are a pop art lover, it basically exhibits most of Lichtenstein work of his whole life. Roy Lichtenstein was an American pop artist, his first work was Look Mickey (1961);
this piece of art is due to his son who pointed at the Mickey Mouse Comic book and said: “ I bet you can’t paint as good a that, eh, Dad? “ Around 1963, he come up with selection of works on war and romance.
The iconic work will be Whaam! (1963), Drowning girl (1963) which lead his name to fame but also received harsh criticisms by that time. My favorite part of his exhibition is artist studio, using a large and complex composition with his signature colours.
